It’s good to break up the routine or give random things to celebrate though! Below is a list of one National “Holiday” per month for an entire year. These are achievable and manageable to celebrate for almost any age group. Having these to celebrate gives you a scheduled, organized, way to be intentional with your family. Read on for some questions about unique holiday celebrations and the list of holidays for the whole year!
One of our family goals that we have stated is that we want our relationship with God and each other to thrive. The only way we can do this is with intentionality. It’s easy to fall into the monotony of daily routines when you’re a parent. Sometimes holidays even feel routine because it’s “what’s always been done”. Our meals, chores, and weekly schedules all fall into a typical routine because that’s what is necessary to have a thriving day-to-day.
Does it cost money to celebrate unique holidays?
The cost for any of these is minimal. You can make these unique holiday celebrations as big or as small as you want according to your budget. I chose ones that we can celebrate with ingredients or items that we keep on hand.
How can I be intentional with my kids for the holidays?
Start by telling them ahead of time about it. Anticipate the excitement with them. Tell them that you are excited about it. Look at a calendar, circle it, or mark it. Count down the week ahead. Ask them to participate! Ask for their opinions or ideas for each event.
How can I prepare for unique holidays with my family?
The first thing is to make sure that you and your spouse are on the same page with the planned holidays. We recommend weekly family meetings to help prevent things from falling through the cracks as well as being able to be intentional each week.
Make sure you have the supplies on hand for the upcoming holidays or plan when you will purchase what you need. If you’re planning to celebrate it outside, check the forecast and prepare alternative locations in case the weather takes a turn!
The biggest way to prepare is to build anticipation for it. Tell your kids about why it’s important to you to celebrate with them. Give them hints or brag about how great it’s going to be. You are starting traditions that you can build memories from.
Unique Holidays to Celebrate with Your Family Each Month
January
January 19th is National Popcorn Day. You can buy prepopped popcorn or microwaveable popcorn, or you can pop it over the stove. There are a bunch of fun popcorn toppings to offer, plus you can offer sweet or savory toppings. You can make it a popcorn “bar” with lots of options to put on it like butter, chocolate syrup,
February
February 26th is Tell a Fairy Tale Day. Make it an event! Pajamas, popcorn, or a special snack, sound effects, or background music! Bonus if you can show them an animated movie afterward that correlates to the Fairy Tale!
March
March 14 is “pi” day. As in 3.14. It’s cute and funny. My sister has made a pie every pie day for probably ten years. We’re going to start doing this in our home each March 14th. If you don’t have a good traditional pie recipe, check out our Chocolate Chip Cookie Pie!
April
April 18th is International Juggler’s day. My brother used to get paid to juggle and he can juggle a lot more than the traditional three items, plus he has been known to juggle fire. Our daughter is very interested in it now! Make it a competition, a show, or a circus that they get to participate in. Watch YouTube videos and practice juggling as a family.
May
May 4th is Star Wars Day. As in may the force be with you. If we can, we try to wear Star Wars clothes and watch a Star Wars movie or show. With little ones, we can have lightsaber battles too.
June
June 30th is Meteor Watch Day. Bennett loves to lay out at night and watch the stars regularly. So a holiday to lay out and do that fits our family perfectly. Lay out on blankets and with blankets and pillows, have summer snack food, and maybe have a book to reference constellations or space-related questions.
July
July 24th is Ice Cream Day. You can make it an event to go out and buy ice cream, or it could be a build-your-own sundae at-home day. You can make it a test-tasting day or a competition, or a sit in a special spot and eat ice cream together!
August
August 19th is World Photo Day. Make it a day where the kids are in charge of photographing. Or make it a competition. Go somewhere special or set up props and costumes for the family to try out. Picnic outside in a beautiful setting to make an afternoon of it!
September
September 19th is International Talk Like A Pirate Day. This one requires some creativity, but costumes and decorations will help. Make it a meal that everyone talks like a pirate or make a pirate scavenger hunt throughout your home or yard that everyone is required to talk like a pirate during. Depending on the age of your kids, you can end with a pirate movie like Pirates of the Caribbean.
October
October 14th is National Dessert Day. You can make this be a particular dessert, multiple desserts, making desserts, or dessert for breakfast or dinner. Check out some of our desserts here!
November
November 6th is National Nacho Day. Nachos are a great snack, and they can also be made into a great dinner with enough ingredients. You can go so far as to have nachos for dinner and then make dessert nachos for after!
December
December 13th is National Hot Chocolate Day. You can make this extra special by having it be the first hot chocolate of the winter season. You can make it a build-your-own hot chocolate bar followed by movies or games. If you want a unique alternative to traditional hot chocolate, check out our recipe for Spiced Hot Chocolate.
These holidays are just suggestions, and I know there are dozens and dozens of others each month. Are there ones that you would choose over others? Let us know in the comments below!
