Is spiced hot chocolate spicy?

This spiced hot chocolate mix is not spicy. It has allspice, nutmeg, cloves, salt, and black pepper. I know that some hot chocolate mixes call for cayenne pepper. I chose to stay away from spicy and keep this mix in the savory category.

Is this Colonial Williamsburg’s hot chocolate mix?

No, but it is inspired by the Charlton’s Coffeehouse hot chocolate sample that they give at the end of the tour.

Do you need to add chocolate chips to the hot chocolate mix?

I would not leave out chocolate chips. A lot of hot chocolate mix recipes call for either dry milk or cocoa butter. I find that the chocolate chips give the hot chocolate mix the fat and creaminess that is missing in other recipes.

Does this recipe use dry milk?

No dried milk in this recipe! Maybe you could use that in place of the chocolate chips, but I used the chocolate chips to bring in the creaminess that dry milk brings in other recipes.

How much mix does the Spiced Hot Chocolate Mix Recipe make?

This recipe makes 1 quart of Spiced Hot Chocolate Mix. That 1 quart makes 7-8 cups of hot chocolate.

Can you make individual servings of the spiced hot chocolate mix?

Yes! If you want to just make one cup of it without the hassle of making a whole jar of the mix, here are the ingredients: 1 tsp powdered sugar, ¾-1 tsp chocolate chips, ¼ tsp cocoa powder, ⅛ tsp each of allspice, nutmeg, and cloves, a pinch of salt and a pinch of black pepper. Combine these ingredients in one cup of heated water or milk and mix thoroughly.

How to make Spiced Hot Chocolate Mix

This recipe is so easy! All that you do is combine the ingredients thoroughly in either a bowl and transfer it to a jar with a lid, or mix it in the jar itself. I mixed it in the jar itself without any difficulties.

The only tool that I recommend is a wide funnel like these if you’re going to be placing this in a mason jar. It made the whole process quick and with minimal mess.

First, in a bowl or a quart mason jar, mix together 1 cup of powdered sugar, 1/4 cup cocoa powder, 2 tbsp nutmeg, 2 tbsp allspice, 2 tbsp cloves, 1 tbsp salt, and 1 tbsp pepper. I used a whisk to mix the ingredients together first and then I put a lid on it and shook it vigorously.

Then add ¾ cup of chocolate chips. I used semi-sweet but depending on your preference you could use semi-sweet, dark, milk chocolate, or even a combination of those. I put about half of the chocolate chips in the jar, shook, and then repeated with the rest.

If you didn’t make this in the jar, add the mix to a jar or container with an airtight lid. This is a great DIY Christmas gift, so we made printable gift tags that you can get for free on our Patreon. Once you print the page (there are nine tags on the page), cut them out and punch a hole in the top. You then can use a seasonal ribbon or twine to tie the tag onto the jar.

To make a cup of the Spiced Hot Chocolate Mix, add 3-4 tbsp of the mix to one cup of heated water or milk and enjoy!
