One of the first plants that pops up in our garden each spring is our spearmint plant. It grows tall and if you just slightly brush it as you walk past, you will smell the freshest mint aroma. Fresh Iced Mint Tea is one of the staple drinks we keep in our fridge all summer and it marks the beginning of spring for us each year.

Can you make Mint Tea hot?
Absolutely! You don’t have to cool this tea down before you drink it. Fresh hot mint tea is another one of our favorite drinks! Follow the directions as they are written but just don’t chill before serving!
Is Mint Tea good for you?
Peppermint has a ton of health benefits! It can help relieve cramps and headaches, improve sleep and digestive issues, plus it can help freshen your breath!
Very few people experience side effects from consuming mint tea. However, keep an eye out for heartburn and diarrhea as this can be a symptom of an allergic reaction or intollerance.
Additionally! If you are breastfeeding, be aware that mint can decrease your milk supply.
Can I make the mint flavor stronger in homemade Mint tea?
If you want a stronger mint flavor, you can increase the quantity of mint in your brew or increase the amount of time that you are brewing it for. If you brew your tea for too long though it can become bitter.
Where can I get fresh mint?
You can buy fresh mint at your local grocery store, farmer’s market, or a farmstand. We grow it in our backyard and love having it! Spring is definitely a great time to buy some mint to grow yourself. It’s invasive so if you grow it yourself, make sure it’s in an area where you can control it. Otherwise, it is a great container plant! You can plant it in a windowbox or a pot on your porch or patio!

Is there specialty equipment needed to make Fresh Iced Mint Tea?
I like to use a fine mesh strainer and cheesecloth to make sure I’m not getting any dirt particles or little bugs that didn’t get washed off initially in my final product. One or the other though is better than nothing at all. If you want to know what other tools, equipment, and ingredients we recommend that you have on hand, check out our beginner home cook essentials guide!
How to Make Fresh Iced Mint Tea
10 cups of water
1 oz of fresh mint (approximately 1 packed cup)
¼ cup of honey or sugar (to taste, you may want your tea to be sweeter)
First, bring 10 cups of water to a boil. You can boil it in a stock pot or plan to use a heat proof bowl. Once at a boil, turn off the heat and add 1 oz or approximately 1 packed cup of rinsed mint tea leaves.
Let steep for 10 minutes. Once steeped, remove all the mint leaves using tongs or a strainer. Strain your tea through a fine mesh strainer and/or a cheesecloth to make sure there is no additional dirt or small bugs in your final drink.
Pour ½ cup honey to the still warm tea, stirring to incorporate. You can use the same amount of sugar as an alternative. This is a lightly sweetened tea so you can increase or decrease sweetener to your preference.
Chill until ready to serve. Add a sliced lemon or lime for garnish and added flavor. Let us know in the comments below if there is a summer drink that you and your family have during the summer!

Yum!!! I love our mint! This will be a refreshing drink!
Thank you!
I needed this recipe! I grew mint in my herb garden last summer and never made tea with it. I will have to give it a try this year. Thank you! Looks super refreshing.
I hope you enjoy it! It’s one of our favorite summer drinks. I spoke with someone who said she makes it all summer and freezes it in gallon bags so she can have it all winter!
We’re excited for mint season also! The children love making tea with it, clover, and other wild edibles. Spearmint is my favorite, so refreshing!
Oh I never knew you could do that with clover! Spearmint is my favorite too!
Right in time for Florida heat!!Looks delicious!! 🤩
I’ve got some mint out back just getting eaten alive by bugs… I will be making this today! Thank you!
That’s so encouraging! I hope you thoroughly enjoy it!
I love how simple this recipe is! I will have to try this lovely, refreshing drink myself!!
Thank you! I hope you love it!
This looks so good! I may have to plant mint this summer 🙂
I recommend it!
I love to make a huge batch of concentrate and have it in the fridge over the summer! I heard someone say that they always pick the leaves off because it can make it bitter. I didn’t take the time to do that and it seemed ok. Maybe its best to pick young stems to avoid any bitter taste? It looks like you use the stem too.
I definitely use the stems! You just want to make sure that the leaves haven’t started flowering! And I heard about making concentrated batches earlier this week! I need to try that.
So refreshing!
It is!
Perfect time of year to try this recipe. Thank you so much!
Always time for a good mint tea. Thank you for sharing your recipe.
Thank you!
This sounds so refreshing. I love mint in the summer months!
It is! I do too!
Looking forward to trying this!
I hope you love it!
Mmm this sounds delicious! Thank you for letting people know it can decrease milk supply. 😁
Thank you! I didn’t realize all the different things that could decrease it and mint tea was one of the sadder ones I learned about!
