Taco pizza is a fun alternative to traditional pizza that when made at home is simple and affordable. This recipe is adaptable to different tastes depending on your family.
When I was growing up, ordering pizza was a treat no matter what, and because we were a family of 7 if we got a topping, it was pepperoni. That was all I knew for pizza until one time my dad hadn’t eaten dinner and we had to go somewhere so he stopped in the pizza shop and got just one slice of pizza. Taco pizza. He let me try it and my mind was blown. Tacos, although well-loved, were also a rarity in our household, and putting it on pizza crust makes a good meal fantastic. Even now at least 15 years later I think that taco pizza is such a treat.
Somehow though I had never thought about making it on my own despite having my own kitchen for more than 10 years now. That all changed when my family chose to have family pizza night. I had wanted to make a variety of pizzas and my childhood desire for taco pizza came to the front of my mind immediately.
What toppings go on Taco Pizza?
I had made tacos earlier in the week so I had a lot of the ingredients and just wanted to add a few things to make it feel restaurant-worthy. Taco pizza is a great way to reuse taco or Mexican food leftovers.
I had the toppings that we used but was out of a few extras that my family would like, such as shredded iceberg lettuce. Our family is not a fan of olives, and Bennett doesn’t love jalapenos so I didn’t add either of those, but you can top it with whatever taco toppings your family enjoys. You could even add black beans or refried beans.
Pizza Dough:
I used homemade dough that I had stored in the fridge this time, but pre-made dough, frozen dough, or a premade crust would also work well. I baked my crust according to the recipe directions and while it was baking, I pulled out all of my ingredients.
Frugal Living Tip: If you make homemade pizza dough, make an extra pizza or two worth of the dough and freeze it so that you have dough on hand for an impromptu pizza night. If you don’t make homemade dough, Aldi has pizza dough balls for a really decent price that you can stock up on in your freezer.
How to Assemble Taco Pizza:
Instead of tomato sauce, in a bowl, I combined 2 oz of room temperature cream cheese and ¼ cup Greek yogurt (you can use that or sour cream) with a pinch of salt. I spread this over the pizza crust.
Then I combined 6 oz of salsa and one can of drained diced tomatoes. I used my own canned tomatoes and salsa but you can customize this pizza to your level of spiciness with a hotter salsa and/or fire-roasted tomatoes.
After the salsa and tomatoes, I added my taco meat, it was about a cup of cooked taco meat (I reheated it in the microwave before putting it on the pizza) but I would use more next time. This was leftovers but if I was making it again I would probably do about a half pound of ground beef cooked and then seasoned with taco seasoning. I then topped the pizza with about a cup of shredded Mexican cheese. Check out our homemade taco seasoning recipe!
The pizza was baked in a 400-degree oven for 12 minutes until the cheese was melted and the other toppings were heated through.
When the pizza came out I topped it with some chopped fresh chives from the garden. This is when I would also top it with olives, shredded lettuce, jalapenos or diced onions.
This is a pizza that I am really excited to make again. I enjoy that I can use leftovers from a taco night to make it and am looking forward to using some more toppings next time. What are your go-to taco toppings and would they be good on the pizza?
