Savory French Toast

Savory French toast is a delicious and unique take on traditional French toast. It has the same basic ingredients of bread, milk, and eggs, but uses savory herbs to transform the overall taste.

This recipe came out so good and we reheated leftovers the next day in a skillet again and they tasted just as good as freshly made!

What different herbs can I use in Savory French Toast?

Thyme, ground mustard, chives, and even parmesan can be added to or used as a substitute for the herbs used.

What can I top Savory French Toast with?

Top Savory French Toast with a fried egg, crumbled bacon, spinach, arugula, and/or fresh herbs.

How do I make Savory French Toast taste like it’s from a restaurant?

First, slice your bread thicker than you would be normally inclined. Slice them about an inch thick. Next, make sure that the bread is stale, or at least let it sit out on the counter until it is dried out. Then, make sure that the dried-up bread gets to sit in the dairy mixture long enough to soak in all the flavors.

Making Savory French Toast:

Special Equipment:

No special equipment is needed, but an immersion blender can make it easier!

Here’s the Caraway Skillet I used

Measuring spoons

Measuring cups

Ingredients

1 loaf of stale bread (or bread that has been left open on the counter for several hours) cut into even slices.

1 cup of milk (of your choice, we used almond milk)

6 eggs

1 teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon thyme

Pinch of black pepper

1 teaspoon garlic powder

1 teaspoon onion powder

Butter or oil for the pan

Garnish with fresh herbs (or a pinch of dried parsley)

bread soaking in a bowl of egg and milk and herbs

Heat a large skillet on medium heat.  In a bowl, whisk together milk, eggs, salt, thyme, garlic powder, onion powder, and black pepper.

Soak the bread in the dairy mixture, for about 30 seconds per side (if it’s not fully submerged) or about 45-60 seconds if fully submerged.  Don’t loose track of time, if you do, you may not have enough egg mixture to last the entire loaf of bread.

Put about a tablespoon of butter or oil into the hot pan and, once melted, place the bread in the skillet. Lower the heat to medium-low. Savory French toast should be cooked low and slow if possible to fully cook the bread while giving a toast texture without burning it.

Wait until the first side gets nicely golden brown before flipping the bread over. You only want to flip the bread one time.  Repeat until you’ve cooked all of the slices of bread.

Serve with fried eggs, hash browns, or grits!
