After the kids go to bed, we like to watch a movie or play a game and indulge in a small dessert. Chocolate chip sourdough mug cake is our new go-to dessert because it is easy and quick to make, and the sourdough starter makes it easier on our stomachs!
What is mug cake?
Mug cake is typically a cake that can be baked in the microwave because it doesn’t call for an egg. Contrary to its name, you do not need to bake it in a mug. You can use a small bowl but the mug is easier because of the handle.
Should I use an active starter or discard to make sourdough mug cake?
I have used this recipe with both active starter and discard and you can use either one to make this sourdough mug cake.
Can I use more chocolate chips?
You can add a small spoonful more of chocolate chips but I find that the texture of the melted chips throws off the whole mug cake. If you’re looking for a more chocolate flavor, you can take out 10 grams (about 1 tablespoon) of flour and add about a tablespoon or 10 grams of unsweetened cocoa powder to the batter.
How to Make Chocolate Chip Sourdough Mug Cake:
Things to note:
This recipe makes 2 mug cakes! You can halve the recipe to make only 1 sourdough mug cake.
This recipe was created using the weight measurements for accuracy. It is the way I recommend making it. Plus, it saves you dishes! I did record volume measurements though and have made it that way a few times as well.

Ingredients:
75 grams of flour (½ cup)
50 grams of sugar (¼ cup)
6 grams of baking powder (1 ½ tsp)
2 grams of salt (¼ tsp)
70 grams of milk of your choice (5 ½ tbsp)
40 grams of oil (3 ½ tbsp)
7 grams of vanilla extract (1 ½ tsp)
80 grams of starter (5 tbsp)
40 grams of chocolate chips (3 tbsp)
This recipe is so easy to make! Combine the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt in a bowl, and whisk so there are no clumps. Next add in the milk, oil, and vanilla extract. Whisk that well. Then add in the sourdough starter. Whisk this in quickly. The mixture will become airy and start to rise because of the baking powder. Fold in the chocolate chips.
Divide the batter evenly between two mugs and place in the microwave together. Cook the mug cake for 2 minutes and 30 seconds. Then let the mug cake rest for 1 minute before eating.
