What is Caesar dressing?

Caesar dressing is traditionally a salad dressing that contains garlic, anchovy paste, lemon juice, mustard Worcestershire sauce, mayonnaise, parmesan cheese, and salt and pepper. Caesar dressing has a strong and zesty flavor to it. It is different from ranch dressing which is considered to be more light and herby.

Where does Caesar dressing come from?

Even though the name may make you think it came from ancient Rome, Caesar dressing actually comes from Mexico and is named after its creator. Instead of Julius Caesar, an Italian chef whose first name was Caesar came up with this popular salad dressing!

What can you use Caesar dressing for?

Caesar salad dressing is obviously most commonly used as a salad dressing. However, it can also be used as a dip for raw vegetables or crispy chicken! You can also use it as a spread on sandwiches or with roasted vegetables.

This homemade Caesar dressing is easy to make in our household because it contains ingredients that we always keep on hand. Check out our Beginner Home Cook Essentials Guide for a list of ingredients that we recommend always keeping on hand!

How to make homemade Caesar dressing:

This recipe makes a little over ¾ cup of homemade Caesar dressing. It’s super easy though to double or halve this recipe to make as much or as little as you need for any given occasion. The dressing stays good in the fridge for about a week. If you are going to use it as a dip, it may spoil faster if vegetables are being directly dipped into it.

Ingredients:

  • ½ cup mayo
  • ¼ cup parmesan cheese
  • 3 tbsp lemon juice (approximately one fresh lemon)
  • 2 ½ tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 4 cloves of garlic, minced, or about 1 tsp of garlic powder
  • 1 tsp salt

The only preparation aside from mixing this dressing is squeezing a lemon, and finely mincing your garlic cloves. If you don’t have a fresh lemon, bottled lemon juice will be fine. 1 lemon contains about 3 tablespoons of lemon juice. And if you don’t have fresh cloves of garlic, you can substitute about ¼ tsp of garlic powder per garlic clove. Last summer we grew our garlic, unfortunately, I didn’t have enough left for this recipe but I’m looking forward to growing it again this fall!

Mix all of the ingredients until they are well incorporated. Let the bowl rest in the refrigerator for at least an hour prior to serving.
