Bedroom Cleaning Checklist

A bedroom cleaning checklist can be a helpful tool to organize the way that you clean any bedroom in your house. Check out our free downloadable bedroom cleaning checklist plus our tips and supply suggestions.

When I first started homemaking, I found the routine of cleaning to be both mundane and overwhelming. I would forget when I had cleaned last or what I had done before. I looked for checklists and tips for organizing, but never found ones I liked. What I’ve assembled below is what I wish I could have found more than 10 years ago when I first started my homemaking journey.

Stay tuned for more cleaning checklist downloads! This post is one in a series that will be coming out once a week for the next five weeks! A lot of the information may feel recycled, or repeated from one post to the next, but the idea is that repetition can make things easier. Plus, if it works well, why change it?

How long does it take to complete this cleaning checklist?

How long this takes will be completely dependent on how frequently it’s done, your ability to focus on the task, and the size of your home. And when I say your ability to focus on the task, I mean for any reason. Some days I can get deep cleaning done in less than an hour and other times it can take me a day or two because of scheduling conflicts, children needing me, or my inability (or lack of desire) to focus.

How often should I clean a bedroom?

General tidying should be happening every day, a good cleaning that includes vacuuming about once a week, and everything on this checklist (except for the seasonal list) should get done once a month.

What supplies do I need for this Bedroom Cleaning Checklist?

You’ll need general cleaning supplies and I list below what we use or have used in the past that has worked for us.

  • Baking Soda
  • Washcloths
  • Extendable Duster55
  • Window cleaner
  • All Purpose Cleaner
  • Dyson Cordless Vacuum – You don’t need this one, it’s the one that we use and love. Our house is almost a hundred years old and outlets are few and far between. A cordless vacuum makes vacuuming go a lot faster.
  • This bedroom cleaning checklist can be adapted to any bedroom in the house, whether it’s the primary bedroom, a child’s bedroom, or a guest room. Our download has space for you to add your personalized tasks and notes.

Bedroom Cleaning Checklist:

Bedroom Cleaning: Organizing

First, tidy the room. Take everything that doesn’t belong and put it in its right place. You can also have three boxes in your room that are labeled trash, relocate, and donate. Place items in the appropriate box. You can do this with just surface items or go through your closets and all shelves, cabinets, drawers, and storage. Don’t forget under your bed, too!

If you’re utilizing this list for a kids’ room, you can make sure that you’re going through toy boxes and clothes that are out of season, don’t fit, or need repairs.

Sometimes this organizing part is overwhelming, especially if you haven’t gone through things in a while. Here’s our guide to decluttering!

Bedroom Cleaning: Wash/wipe/clean everything

Start at the top and work your way down when cleaning. This way, when you’re dusting, you’re not dirtying things below that are already cleaned. Let gravity work with you!

  • Wipe the ceiling fan blades and light fixtures.
  • Dust the corners of the room and the walls. This includes any molding, chair railing, wainscotting, and doors.
  • Wash windows and mirrors (anything that’s glass).
  • Wash blinds/curtains
  • Wipe down windowsills
  • Dust all the furniture. This includes the bed frame and headboard, picture frames, wall art, mirrors, and faux plants.

Bedroom Cleaning: Reset

The idea of the reset part of the cleaning checklist is to make your room feel fresh. It gives the room a new start, and when done with care, can make people feel rested just walking into the room!

  • Change the bed sheets (don’t forget about the comforter/duvet cover).  Also use this time to add or remove extra blankets.
  • Tidy and organize the closet and drawers.
  • Empty the trash can and trash box, relocate the items that don’t belong in the bedroom, put the donation box in your car or where you won’t forget it!
  • Restock or make a list of items that are out, like your tissue box or snacks that you keep by your bedside. Also consider whether you need new blankets, pillows, hangers, etc.
  • Water your plants
  • Vacuum. This can be done whenever you’re done dusting and carrying things in and out of the room. So it can be done before you start the reset part of the cleaning process, but I personally like saving it for the end.

Seasonal Bedroom Cleaning Tasks:

There are deep cleaning tasks for the bedroom that don’t need to happen regularly, only once or twice a year. Here are our suggestions. Let us know in the comments below what your seasonal bedroom cleaning looks like.

  • Rotate the mattress (twice a year).
  • Change out candle scents to match the season.
  • Rearrange seasonally appropriate clothes, shoes, and accessories.
  • Update pictures.
  • Refresh the carpets with baking soda before vacuuming. You can also use a product specifically for refreshing carpets, we have found though that baking soda works great!
  • Check the batteries on fire alarms.

  1. This is such a helpful guide and I love the idea of using a checklist. I could really benefit from that because I don’t focus well on things like this!

  2. I feel like bedrooms can be overlooked because it isn’t the type of room your guests see that you want to deep clean. Great info.

  3. Love! Such a helpful guide and with a printable?! Awesome! I rarely remember to clean the windows or turn my mattress… Definitely need to get on this.
