A clean bathroom is refreshing and peaceful. One that is not cleaned well or kept up with can make you feel overwhelmed and stressed out. We have a free bathroom cleaning checklist that you can send right to your inbox, and below are our tips, steps, and recommended supplies for doing a deep bathroom cleaning. This is post two in a series of household room cleaning checklists.

Some of the tips, supplies, or methods we recommend for deep cleaning the bathroom will be similar to or exactly match those we recommend for deep cleaning your bedroom and other rooms in the house. But there are new tips and supplies specifically relevant to bathrooms, too!
Here’s last week’s Bedroom Cleaning Checklist post, in case you missed it!
How often should I clean a bathroom?
General bathroom cleaning should be happening every day, as in most rooms of a house. A bathroom is used often and feels like a breeding ground for bacteria. A cleaning that includes everything on this list (except for the seasonal list) should be done once a week to every other week, depending on the frequency the bathroom is used.
How long does it take to complete this bathroom cleaning checklist?
How long this takes will be completely dependent on how frequently it’s done, your ability to focus on the task, and the size of your home (meaning the size of your bathroom and how many bathrooms you’re trying to clean).
And when I say your ability to focus on the task, I mean for any reason. Some days I can get bathroom deep cleaning done in less than an hour, and other times it can take me almost an entire day because of scheduling conflicts, children needing me, or my inability (or lack of desire) to focus.

What supplies should I have for cleaning the bathroom?
These supplies are what we use when we complete the bathroom cleaning checklist. If you’re looking for new supplies or refills, check out these below.
- Washcloths
- Extendable Duster
- Window cleaner
- All Purpose Cleaner
- Dyson Cordless Vacuum – You don’t need this one, it’s the one that we use and love. Our house is almost a hundred years old and outlets are few and far between. A cordless vacuum makes vacuuming go a lot faster.
- Toilet bowl cleaner
- Shower Cleaner
- Toilet bowl brush
- Mop or Steam Mop
Bathroom Cleaning Checklist:
Bathroom Cleaning: Organizing
First, tidy the bathroom. Take everything that doesn’t belong and put it in its right place. Just like in the bedroom, you can also have three boxes in your room that are labeled trash, relocate, and donate. Place items in the appropriate box. You can do this with just surface items or go through the cabinets and closets in the room.
If your towels need to be washed, now is when to take them down and either throw them in the relocate basket or a wash basket.
Sometimes this organizing part is overwhelming, especially if you haven’t gone through things in a while. Here’s our guide to decluttering when you’re overwhelmed!
Bathroom Cleaning: Wash/wipe/clean everything
Start at the top and work your way down when cleaning. This way, when you’re dusting and scrubbing, you’re not dirtying things below that are already cleaned. Let gravity work with you!
- Wipe light fixtures and vents.
- Dust the ceilings and the walls. This includes any molding, chair railing, wainscotting, and doors.
- Wash windows, mirrors, and any glass in the bathroom.
- Wash blinds/curtains/shower curtains/shower doors.
- Wipe down windowsills.
- Dust all fixtures and decor. Don’t forget soap holders!
- Spray and wipe down the inside of the shower/tub. This includes the shower liner if you have one.
- Spray and wipe down the toilet using the scrub brush. Wipe the toilet bowl (inside and out), the tank, and the base.
Bathroom Cleaning: Reset
The reset part of the cleaning checklist is to make the bathroom feel new. It gives the room a fresh start, and will help make you and others walking into the bathroom feel calm.
- Replace washcloths, towels, and hand towels as needed.
- Refill or replace toilet paper, soap, shampoo, and conditioner.
- Tidy and organize the closet and drawers, and take note of things that you are out of or will be out of soon
- Empty the trash can and trash box, relocate the items that don’t belong in the bathroom, and put the donation box in your car or where you won’t forget it!
- Water your plants (or make sure you dusted any faux ones).
- Vacuum and/or mop/steam mop. Depending on the size of your bathroom, you can use your all-purpose cleaner/disinfectant and some wash rags to wipe down the floor.
Seasonal Bathroom Cleaning Checklist:
There are not as many deep cleaning tasks for the bathroom that don’t need to happen regularly. Here’s a small list of things that we don’t do as regularly, but still get done a few times a year.
- Decorate for the season.
- Change out candle scents to match the season.
- Make sure the drains are clear, and the toilet is in good working order.
- If there is a fire alarm in your bathroom, replace the batteries.
- Deeply sanitize or replace the shower liner.
- Evaluate if it’s time to purchase new towels and washcloths.
