This laundry room cleaning checklist can also applied to offices or other small rooms of your house. Or areas of your house. We don’t currently have an office, but we have a computer cabinet that gets treated like an office that needs to be tidied and cleaned. If you don’t have a laundry room, just apply this list to the area that you do your laundry in.
How often should I clean a laundry room?
General tidying should be happening each time you do laundry. Deep cleaning should happen about once a month.
How long does it take to complete this cleaning checklist?
Just as in the other rooms, how long this takes will be completely dependent on how frequently it’s done, your ability to focus on the task, and the size of your home. And when I say your ability to focus on the task, I mean for any reason. Some days I can get laundry room cleaning done in less than an hour, and other times it can take me an entire afternoon because of scheduling conflicts, children needing me, or my inability (or lack of desire) to focus.

What supplies should I have for cleaning the laundry room?
These are supplies that we use for cleaning our laundry room. These are what we would recommend for cleaning any other small rooms of your house as well!
- Washcloths
- Extendable Duster
- Window cleaner
- All Purpose Cleaner
- Dyson Cordless Vacuum – You don’t need this one, it’s the one that we use and love. Our house is almost a hundred years old and outlets are few and far between. A cordless vacuum makes vacuuming go a lot faster.
Laundry Room Cleaning Checklist:
Laundry Room Cleaning: Organizing
First tidy the room. Take everything that doesn’t belong and put it in its right place. As in the previous posts in this series, we recommend having three boxes in the room that are labeled trash, relocate, and donate. Place items in the appropriate box. You can do this with just surface items or go through your closets and all shelves, cabinets, drawers, and storage.
Go through the pile of mismatched socks. Decide if they need to be thrown out or repurposed (or have a match that you didn’t realize was there too!).
Sometimes organizing a room can be overwhelming, especially if you haven’t gone through things in a while. Here’s our guide to decluttering!
Laundry Room Cleaning: Wash/wipe/clean everything
I don’t know what your laundry room situation looks like. It could be it’s own room, in the bathroom, the basement, or across from your kitchen sink. You also may be applying this list to other small rooms of your house. The list below is a general one that can be applied and adjusted to suit your needs.
Start at the top and work your way down when cleaning. This way, when you’re dusting, you’re not dirtying things below that are already cleaned. Let gravity work with you!
- Wipe light fixtures, vents, and check dryer vents as well.
- Dust the ceiling and the walls. This includes any molding, chair railing, wainscotting, and doors.
- Wash windows and mirrors (anything with glass).
- Wash blinds/curtains.
- Wipe down windowsills.
- Dust all furniture (shelves and the actual washing appliances too).
- Dust plants (real or fake).
Laundry Room Cleaning: Reset
The goal of resetting your laundry room (or any other room in your house) is to make your room feel fresh. It gives the room a new start, and can help anyone entering the room feel refreshed, encouraged, and motivated!
- Tidy and organize cabinets, shelves, and drawers.
- Empty the trash can and trash box, relocate the items that don’t belong in the bedroom, put the donation box in your car or where you won’t forget it!
- Restock items that you are out of (laundry detergent, wash cloths, etc.)
- Water the plants.
- Vacuum and/or sweep.
Laundry Room Seasonal Cleaning:
There are not many deep cleaning tasks for the laundry room that don’t need to happen regularly. Here is a small list of things in the laundry room that we only worry about once or twice a year. Let us know in the comments below what your seasonal laundry room cleaning looks like.
- Change out decor for the season.
- Change out candle scents to match the season.
- Check the batteries on fire alarms and remotes.
- Make a new batch of laundry detergent.
